Many of the older streets in Gateshead, such as those in Bensham, Saltwell and Shipcote, are lined with Tyneside flats. Each house holds two flats, one upstairs and one down, each with its own front door. The bedrooms are often small, with a door, a window and a chimney breast sharing the walls.

Can a wardrobe be built over a stair bulkhead?
Yes. We build the wardrobe around the bulkhead, so the space above it becomes shelves or a shallower section. The rest of the run keeps full-depth hanging space. It is a common request in post-war Gateshead semis.
What style suits a Low Fell villa?
Painted shaker or panelled hinged doors sit well with original joinery. Taking them up to the ceiling makes the most of the room’s height. For a modern contrast, plain doors in a muted colour also work.
