Hinged wardrobes · Newcastle
Fitted wardrobes with traditional opening doors, made to measure for homes across Newcastle. Open a door and the whole section is in view.
Overview
Hinged doors are the traditional way to close a wardrobe. When you open one, you can see and reach everything behind it. That makes the inside easy to plan and getting dressed a little quicker.
They also give you the widest choice of styles. Panelled doors suit the Victorian and Edwardian rooms found in Gosforth and across Newcastle. Slab and handleless doors give a cleaner look in new builds.
The main thing to check is the space in front, as each door needs room to swing. Where that space is tight, sliding door wardrobes may suit you better.
Door styles
The door style sets the tone for the room. These four are the ones we discuss most often.
Design options
Handles and door combinations change the feel of a hinged wardrobe. Here are three ideas to start with.

Tall, flat doors with slim brass handles look smart against a white finish.

Warm woodgrain doors, a pair of mirror doors and a drawer stack make a practical mix.

Small knobs on plain doors give a relaxed look in cottages and family bedrooms.

Materials & finishes
Hinged doors come in almost any colour or texture. We bring samples and handles to your visit so you can compare them in the room.

Soft heritage colours such as cashmere and sage suit shaker doors in older homes. White and pale tones keep smaller rooms bright, while woodgrain adds warmth.
Soft-close hinges stop the doors banging shut. Handles, knobs or push-to-open catches are chosen to suit the door style.
Why it works
It depends on the room. Hinged doors are often the better choice for these reasons.
Every rail, shelf and drawer behind an open door is easy to reach.
With no overlapping panels, drawers can go wherever you want them.
Single or paired doors fit neatly in chimney-breast recesses, where sliding doors can look out of place.
Hinges can be fine-tuned over time, which keeps the doors lined up.

Installation
Hinged doors show every small gap, so careful fitting matters. In older Newcastle houses we scribe to uneven walls and work around picture rails and chimney breasts. Our alcove wardrobes page has more ideas for recesses. As a guide, fitting a single wall usually takes one to two days.
We check the space to the bed, furniture and room door, then size the doors.
The frame is levelled and fixed, and the edges are scribed to the walls.
Each door is hung and adjusted so the gaps are even.
We fit the handles or catches and test every door.

Every space is different. These related services are often combined or considered alongside this one.
You need enough room for the door to open fully and for you to stand in front of it. As a rough guide, that is the width of the door plus a little extra. We check this at your visit.
It depends on the width, the door style and the fittings inside. You get an itemised quote once we have visited. Our fitted wardrobe costs guide explains what affects the price.
Shaker and other panelled doors are a natural match, especially in heritage colours. Many Newcastle period homes also suit a simple handleless design, depending on the look you want.
