Overview

What is a walk-in wardrobe?

A walk-in wardrobe is a small room or area set aside for clothes. Storage lines one or more walls, with space in the middle to choose an outfit and get dressed.

Many start life as something else. The box room in a 1930s semi, a small third bedroom in a Newcastle terrace or part of a large main bedroom can all work well. The width of the room, and where the door and window sit, decide what fits.

Because the storage is open, lighting and finishes matter more than with a standard wardrobe. If you want the bedroom to match, see our fitted bedroom furniture.

Layouts

Which walk-in wardrobe layout fits your space?

The shape of the room usually decides the layout. As a rough guide, allow about 60cm of depth for hanging and about a metre of walkway. We confirm the exact sizes at your visit.

U-shape

Storage on three walls gives the most space. The room needs to be wide enough for storage on both sides and a walkway between.

L-shape

Two walls of storage leave the rest of the room open. It suits narrower rooms, or ones where a window takes up a wall.

Galley

Two runs face each other along a long, narrow room. It is an efficient layout if there is about a metre between them.

Island

A central unit adds drawers and a surface for folding clothes. It needs a larger room with walkway space on every side.

Finishes and lighting

With storage on show, the finish sets the mood of the room. We bring samples to your visit so you can compare them in your own light.

Natural oak effectWarm, light woodgrain
Walnut effectDark, luxurious grain
Stone greyCalm, contemporary mid-tone
GraphiteDeep, dramatic and modern
Smoked glassMoody, boutique feel
Bronze mirrorWarm, tinted reflection

Oak and walnut make an open walk-in feel warm. Graphite and stone give a sleeker, modern look, and smoked glass or bronze mirror adds a richer touch.

Lighting is part of the design. LED strips under shelves and lit rails help you see colours, so we plan power and switches early to keep cables hidden.

  • Open, glazed or doored sections
  • Full-length mirror
  • Matching island finishes

Why it works

Is a walk-in wardrobe worth it?

For many Newcastle households, yes. Giving clothes their own space changes how both rooms work.

  1. A calmer bedroom

With storage moved out, the bedroom can be simpler and quieter.

  2. Everything in view

Open shelves and rails let you see all your clothes at a glance.

  3. A good use of a box room

A room too small for a bed often makes a very good dressing room.

  4. Easier mornings for two

Couples can get ready at the same time without sharing one wardrobe.

Installation

Planning and fitting a walk-in wardrobe in Newcastle

We start with a survey of the whole room, including the ceiling height, windows, radiators and sockets. If the space is part of a loft conversion or other building work in your Newcastle home, we plan around that too. As a guide, making takes a few weeks from design sign-off, and fitting takes longer than a single wardrobe wall. You will know the dates before you commit. Our cost guide breaks down what you pay for.

  1. Survey the room

We measure every wall and note doors, windows and ceiling features.

  2. Choose the layout

We compare layouts with you and agree the walkway space and extras.

  3. Install

Each run is levelled, fixed and scribed to the walls.

  4. Light and finish

We connect the lighting, adjust the doors and drawers, and leave the room ready to use.

FAQs

Walk-in wardrobe FAQs

More answers in our fitted wardrobe FAQs.

How big does a room need to be for a walk-in wardrobe?

It depends on the layout. A single run with a walkway can fit a narrow room, while storage on both sides needs a wider one. We confirm what fits at your visit.

Can you turn a box room into a dressing room?

Yes, and it is a common request in Newcastle. Box rooms are often too small for a bed but work well with storage on one or two walls.

Should a walk-in wardrobe have doors?

It is up to you. Open shelves make everything easy to see, while doors keep the dust off. Many designs use a mix of both.

Can a walk-in wardrobe go in a loft?

Often, yes. Taller storage goes where the ceiling allows, with drawers under the slopes. Our sloping ceiling wardrobes page explains how we plan around eaves.

How much does a walk-in wardrobe cost?

The price depends on the size of the room, the layout and extras such as lighting or an island. Your itemised quote follows the visit. Our costs page lists the things that change the price.

Do you fit walk-in wardrobes outside Newcastle?

Yes. We are based in Newcastle and also cover Gateshead, Sunderland, Durham, Whitley Bay and North Shields. Share your postcode and we will be in touch.
