An open niche breaks up a run of doors. It gives everyday shoes and bags a place of their own.

Making the most of Tyneside flats and box rooms

Heaton is in Newcastle’s east end, across parts of NE6 and NE7. It runs from Jesmond Dene and Armstrong Park across to Byker and Walker. The streets off Chillingham Road and Heaton Road are mostly late Victorian and Edwardian terraces, and many are Tyneside flats.

A Tyneside flat is a pair of homes, one upstairs and one down, with front doors side by side. Bedrooms are a fair height but often small, and doors, windows and fireplaces leave little clear wall. Sliding door wardrobes help here because they need no room to swing open.

Chimney recesses are useful too. A pair of alcove wardrobes turns them into deep cupboards without taking up floor space. In a small room the inside matters as much as the doors, so we plan the hanging, shelves and drawers around what you own.

Late Victorian and Edwardian

Tyneside flats

Upper flats are reached by a straight internal stair, and lower flats have rooms off a hallway. Both tend to have compact bedrooms with walls broken up by fireplaces and doors.

Red-brick terraced houses

Two-storey terraces usually have a small back bedroom or box room. Some also have a loft conversion with sloping ceilings at the top.

  1. Upper flats

Wardrobes are made in sections and put together in the room, so long stairs are fine.

  2. Back lanes and parking

We agree where to park and load with you before fitting day.

  3. Small-room planning

We check door, radiator and bed positions so the wardrobe suits how you use the room.

FAQs

Questions about small-room wardrobes

More answers in our fitted wardrobe FAQs.

Can you fit a wardrobe in a Tyneside flat bedroom?

Yes. These bedrooms rarely have a clear wall, so we design around the fireplace, door and window. Using the chimney recesses and choosing sliding doors often gives you the most storage.

Is a fitted wardrobe worth it in a tiny box room?

Often the box room gains the most. A shallow wardrobe can run wall to wall and floor to ceiling, and we can build over a stair bulkhead. With a well-planned interior, the room becomes a usable bedroom or dressing room.

Can the wardrobe get up the stairs to an upper flat?

Yes. We make every wardrobe in sections that are easy to carry. They are put together in the room, so narrow stairs and tight turns are not a problem.

Do you fit wardrobes in rented and shared houses?

Yes. Heaton has plenty of shared and rented homes, and landlords often want storage that saves space. We usually suggest hard-wearing finishes and simple interiors that suit any tenant.

How long does the work take?

As a rough guide, allow a few weeks from signing off the design. A typical bedroom wall is often fitted in a day or two. Your quote confirms the timeline, and our installation process page sets out each step.

What does a fitted wardrobe cost?

It depends on the size, doors, finish and interior. We price each room after a free visit, and Our costs guide goes through the main price factors.
